Can I cut down a tree?

If you have a tree that you want to remove, here are three easy steps to doing it in accordance with City ordinances:

  1. Make sure that it is your tree. The Planning Division can help you determine if the tree is actually on your property or not. If it is in the street right-of-way, you will need to contact the Public Works Department.
  2. Measure the tree at five feet above ground level. If it is less than two feet in diameter (6-foot-3 in circumference), you can remove the tree without a City permit.
  3. If the tree is two feet or more in diameter (over 6-foot-3 in circumference), you will need a Significant Tree Removal Permit from the City. The application form is available here. Significant trees must be replaced, but there are several options for doing that.
